History

Sylvan-Highlands originated from the word Sylvanus, which means “Roman Deity of the Woods” largely in part of it is forest. The neighborhood sprang from Great Plank Road, a 19th Century era road that offered a route between the farmers in the Tualatin Valley and both Willamette and Columbia Rivers.

Washington Park offers a beautiful place to wander for the day with luscious greenery, paved and unpaved paths through garden botanicals. With picnic tables, playgrounds and tennis courts it is a great place to bring the family.

Portland Children's Museum is a delightful and educational place for children that provides hands on workshops. The museum also teaches about nature, taking care of pets, among other important life lessons. The theater offers an opportunity for young aspiring actors to demonstrate their talents.

World Forestry Center is a place to interact with nature and aid in achieving a connection with the environment.

Veterans of Oregon Vietnam Memorial serves as a memorial devoted to Oregonians who served in the Vietnam War.

Hoyt Arboretum is a conservatory and museum of 6000 specimens of trees from around the world. It is a great place to explore and appreciate nature of lands faraway.
