Dallesport Washington is located on State Route 14 along the Columbia River across from The Dalles on the Oregon side of the river. Dallesport is a historical city that was originally a site of the Wishram Tribe who fished on the banks of the river at Celilo Falls. In 1957 the Dalles Dam was constructed flooding the falls and resulting in a loss of the traditional fishing grounds and town.
In the early years before the Dalles Dam travelers had a choice of navigating the steep Barlow Trail over Mt. Hood or the Columbia river and Celilo falls. In 1854 the first ferry crossing was established to help port passengers and goods across the river. Then in 1863 the Oregon Portage Railroad was established. To open up travel by water and around the falls the Dalles-Celilo Canal was constructed in 1915 which was then replaced by the Dalles Dam in 1957.
Summers in Dallesport are typically warm and dry. However, temperatures do drop significantly in the winter and can be quiet cold with rain and snowfall. Dallesport is a straightforward 90-minute commute from Portland/Vancouver and only 30 minutes from Mt. Hood making the city and the surrounding area an ideal home (or second home!) for many who love to work and play in the great outdoors.
