Just over an hour away from Portland/Vancouver, Rowena is an unincorporated community of approximately 200 people. In Wasco County, Oregon, the town is located on the Old Columbia River Highway between Mosier and The Dalles. With an average rainfall of 18 inches and 14 inches of snow per year, winters can be cold and summers warm.
There are several theories about how Rowena got its name. However, long-time locals say Rowena was named after a girl who lived in the area. Rowena is best known for the Rowena Loops, winding horseshoe curves leading up to the Rowena Crest viewpoint on the old highway. The viewpoint overlooks Mayer State Park and the Columbia River Gorge. Rowena Crest also has trail head access to Tom McCall Nature Preserve.
