Situated on the Columbia River, Umatilla, Oregon is a town rich in history an was first occupied by the indigenous Umatilla tribe for approximately 10,000 years before Lewis and Clark traveled to the Pacific Northwest. In recent years protected relics and burial grounds have been uncovered by archaeologists making Umatilla one of the largest prehistoric sites in Oregon.
Umatilla later became an important trade center for Gold Rush travelers, settlers, local farmers, and ranchers. The original town site of Umatilla was demolished and relocated when the United States Corps of Engineers constructed the John Day Dam. It was thought the land would flood, but this was not the case, and today the old town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Present day Umatilla has plenty to offer with its nearby outdoor adventures such as biking, camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and bird watching at local and national parks. Umatilla is only a few miles from Hermiston, Oregon and 30 to 40 minutes from Kennewick, Washington and Pendleton, Oregon. Pendleton’s boutique airline offers 3 flights per day between Portland’s International Airport (PDX) and Pendleton (PDT).
