Cascade Locks is a 45-minute drive from Portland/Vancouver situated on the Columbia River. The city took its name from a set of locks built in 1896 to help improve navigation past the Cascades Rapids for travelers. Created by the Bonneville Landslide in 1200 AD, the rapids known as the Cascades of the Columbia blocked passage on the Columbia River. Travelers had a choice of navigating the Barlow Trail over Mt. Hood or rafting or porting around the Columbia River. The locks were submerged after the construction of the Bonneville Dam. Today the Oregon Pony steam engine which carried passengers and freight past the rapids can be seen at Marine Park. Cascade Locks is also home to the Sternwheeler which hosts daily cruises.
Cascade Locks is near Hood River and Mt. Hood giving access to year-round sports such as windsurfing, boating, fishing and skiing. Cascade Locks is also the location of the only bridge (Bridge of the Gods) to cross the Columbia River between Portland and Hood River.
